LOS ANGELES, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Sony's "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" continued to lead the North American box office for a third weekend in a row with an estimated 20.04 million U.S. dollars, pushing its total in North America to an impressive 316.98 million dollars through Sunday.

The action adventure comedy film has brought in 767.8 million dollars worldwide after five weekends in theaters.

Directed by Jake Kasdan and stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan, the sequel to 1995's "Jumanji" follows four teenagers who are transported into the video game world of Jumanji and must work together to beat the game in order to return to the real world.

" 'Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle' continues to dominate the marketplace with a summer style film that is seemingly unbeatable in this typically less competitive January box office environment," said movie analyst Paul Dergarabedian at comScore.

"As great word of mouth has continued, so has the film's ability to consistently draw audiences around the world and with the star power of Johnson and Hart, this has become the biggest success story of the early part of the moviegoing year," Dergarabedian told Xinhua.

Warner Bros.' Afghan war drama "12 Strong" opened in second place with an estimated 16.5 million dollars. The American patriotic film was directed by Nicolai Fuglsig and stars Chris Hemsworth and Oscar nominee Michael Shannon. It's based on Doug Stanton's best-selling book "Horse Soldiers," which tells the true events of CIA paramilitary officers and U.S. Special Forces, sent to Afghanistan to fight against Taliban forces in wake of the September 11 attacks.

Another newcomer, STX's heist action thriller film "Den of Thieves" opened in third place with an estimated 15.32 million dollars. The film follows an elite unit of County Sheriff Deputies who look to stop a crew of thieves that plan to rob the Federal Reserve in Los Angeles.

20th Century Fox's political thriller film "The Post" landed in fourth place with an estimated 12.15 million dollars in its fifth weekend but the second wide expansion weekend.

Another release from 20th Century Fox, the musical biopic "The Greatest Showman", finished fifth with an estimated 11 million dollars in its fifth weekend.
