BUCHAREST, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Both chambers of Romania's Parliament elected new leaders on Monday.
Ciprian Serban, a deputy from the Social Democratic Party (PSD), was elected speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Parliament, with 195 votes in favor and 86 against.
Ilie Bolojan, interim president of the National Liberal Party (PNL), was elected president of the Senate, the upper house, with 70 votes in favor, defeating Mircia Chelaru from the Save Romania Union (AUR) and Nadia-Cosmina Cerva from S.O.S. Romania, who received 29 and 14 votes, respectively.
Earlier in the day, the PSD, PNL, the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR), and national minorities signed a political agreement to form a governing coalition. The coalition aims to implement a reform and investment-focused program to ensure macroeconomic stability, addressing the needs of citizens, businesses, trade unions, and civil society. ■
